Big Brother Loses the Race [8th June 2007]

[8th June 2007]

Lord Taylor of Warwick, black Conservative peer, spoke about the latest race row in Big Brother, in a debate in the House of Lords today.

“It was right to evict a contestant this morning for using the racist ‘N’ word, even though it was not broadcast. But I question the ongoing credibility of this TV show which is building a reputation for allowing racists to participate. This latest incident follows the outrageous remarks by Jade Goody, in the previous series.”

We Cannot Gamble with our Children’s Safety [4th June 2007]

[4th June 2007]

It was perfectly proper for Jim Gamble, head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), to raise the issue of how society deals with paedophiles. But by his clumsy use of words, he has created more heat than light about this serious problem.

Mr Gamble sent out entirely the wrong signal. He has given the impression that some predatory paedophiles should be given a police caution and offered treatment, instead of going to prison.

As a Barrister and Judge, I have dealt with paedophiles over a number of years. In my experience most are either in denial of their wrongdoing or seek to justify their behaviour towards children.

So, the idea that predatory paedophiles will voluntarily offer themselves up for treatment is naive.

Mr Gamble fails to acknowledge that there are not the sufficiently effective support systems in place to treat such offenders in the community.

I agree that paedophiles should be offered treatment, but whilst they are behind bars and away from children. Mr. Gamble is indeed gambling with the safety of children, by his misguided remarks. It is difficult to see how he can retain our confidence in protecting children from this evil.

Lord Taylor of Warwick Slams Road Pricing and Rappers [23rd May 2007]

[23rd May 2007]

Lord Taylor of Warwick, black conservative peer, on Channel 5 TV’s discussion show The Wright Stuff this morning:

“The government’s supposed road pricing draft private scheme is not only draft but daft. It was warned in February, as a result of its own research, that the scheme should not be pursued. It takes no account of a driver’s income, wealth, or size of vehicle, so it would penalize the poor, the disabled, shift workers, and those who live in remote rural communities.
“The better option would be to put more money into public transport so that less people would need to drive cars. Also petrol prices could be increased. 1.8 million people objected to the proposed scheme on the government’s own website. But the government has arrogantly ignored this and the objection from various motoring organizations and transport academics.
“Last night I tabled three parliamentary questions concerning road pricing. The government will have to respond to my questions within fourteen days.”

Lord Taylor was also asked to comment on politically incorrect language. He said:
“I particularly denounce the use of the ‘N’ word used by black hip hop rap singers. They say they are reclaiming the ‘N’ word. By using it, they are showing no respect for their own race and culture. So how can they expect others to respect the black community? Rappers like Snoop Dog and 50 Cent need to show more responsibility in the lyrics they write.”
