Best of the Bunch?

Do older people offer essential experience? Should they be forced to retire to make way for younger workers?

In this time of economic meltdown, these are valuable questions that need careful consideration.

Raising the retirement age further has not been the focus of the lively debates on future budget cuts.

But last week, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) published a report suggesting that the UK do just that.

Suffering in Silence
To be treated with respect and dignity. This is the most basic of Human Rights.

Yet hundreds of Britain’s elderly citizens are denied this. The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) recently published a shocking report.

The report, Rights, Risks and Restraints, is based on a survey of 253 older people and their carers and an analysis of complaints and official inspection reports.

Charities for the elderly are united in saying that abuse in the care sector is widespread.

School Lottery is a Loser
If Ed Balls was a student, I would fail him. His career as Schools Secretary has been stained with the SATS marking fiasco and questionable education standards.

Recently, after a huge amount of stress to pupils, parents and teachers, SATS were abandoned overnight because the Government were unable to devise a suitable marking system.

Accusations of dumbing down to achieve better grades, are increasing with each year of exam results.

Now, the DSCF (Department for Schools, Children and Families) announced that half of all children in England did not get a place at their first choice school this year.

- Topic 3: Wholeness and Balance -

This week we worked on a the Wholeness and Balance module. In this module we looked at how we can achieve a balanced personality. The module taught us that everybody has sub personalities which are all as important as each other. They all need to be understood to create the wholeness that we seek. Apart from our sub personalities we also need to pay attention to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives. Making sure these are also balanced out.

- Topic 2: Authentic Skills -

Last week, we learned more about who we are and how to be true to ourselves. This week we worked on the Authentic Skills module. We discovered what we are actually good at and had to be completely honest with ourselves on exercises, which was very thought-provoking. We did not even know some aspects of ourselves even existed. Taking a look at what we are proud of, what we value, and what we want for the future are just a few of the key areas which this module focusses.

- Topic 1: Authenticity -

This week in our leadership coaching course we have looked at the topic of authenticity. The module focused on the importance on knowing who we are, and how important it is to be true to that person. It pointed out that we do not always have such a clear picture of who we are, what we really stand for or what is most important to us. It asked helpful and constructive questions which made one think about these issues and helped to identify the answers! It is also made interesting points about the importance of not compromising who we truly are, hence encouraging one to live a life of true authenticity.

Plea for Peace

My hope for the new President of America was that he would take America out of an ever worsening relationship with the Middle East. For me, part of the appeal of Barak Obama was that he promised to do so. It is evident from his speech in Cairo last week, however, that he has set his sights on more than just peace on a diplomatic level. He appears to be striving for a new relationship; not just one of “mutual respect” but one of friendship … and ‘actual’ mutual respect.
